Sharp Vies for an Edge in TV Market

By Juro OsawaToday’s flat-panel box sets look drastically different from ancient cathode-ray models. but where a TV set sits, often in the living room facing a couch, hasn’t changed as drastically. One factor that confines TVs to only certain parts of a home is the need to connect the TV to an aerial plug so it can receive broadcast signals. As it becomes more and more hard to sell TVs at premium prices, manufacturers are coming up with new features they hope will entice customers. Juro Osawa/The Wall Street JournalSharp unveiled its new TV line in Tokyo on Thursday.Sharp Corp. says its new Freestyle Aquos line of liquid crystal display TV sets, unveiled Thursday, are not bound by the location of the aerial plug, thanks to a tuner that can wirelessly send broadcast signals to a TV elsewhere in the house. “For people wanting to go around all the furniture and unreservedly design their homes, the TV has been a holdup,” said Keiko Okada, a Sharp executive in payment of design and branding strategy at a push conference.Sharp’s new TVs speak for the latest attempt among box makers to differentiate their product lineup, in a search for an alternative to cutthroat price competition that has been crimping TV earnings at most major electronics makers world-wide for the past few years. in 2009, for example, Samsung Electronics mass-produced light emitting diode-backlit TV sets ahead of rivals. when 3-D TVs debuted in early 2010, the industry hoped the new feature would make a more profitable market segment, but 3-D TVs soon became part of the relentless price competition plaguing the industry. in October, Sony Corp. released new Internet-enabled TV sets that run on Google Inc.’s software, and the so-called “smart TVs” with built-in processors and operating software became one of the major themes at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in January.“Square LCD TVs have become commoditized,” said Tsuneo Nakamura, a Sharp executive who heads the company’s business unit that includes TVs. “the value of TVs keeps declining even when sales volume increases. to prevent that, we must aim something new.”Sharp’s new Freestyle Aquos TVs, which come in four sizes – 20, 32, 40 and 60 inches — can be placed around the house anywhere there is access to a power plug, the Japanese electronics maker said. the new TVs are up to 50% lighter than Sharp’s existing models of the same sizes, and the company says people who want to fix their TVs on the wall would find the new models particularly convenient. Each Freestyle Aquos model comes with a wireless TV tuner a little larger than a paperback novel. by connecting this tuner to the TV aerial, the TV’s display can receive signals from afar. Sharp expects the 20-inch model to sell for about ¥80,000 ($1,033), while the 60-inch model will cost about ¥380,000. the 32- and 40-inch models will go on sale in Japan next month, while the 20- and 60-inch models will come out in late October. Sharp says it doesn’t yet have any concrete plans to sell them outside Japan, but it is considering doing so.Given that it’s possible to find other 32-inch models from Sharp for less than ¥50,000 in Japan, it is doubtful that the new TVs can motivate consumers to pay much higher prices, said Mizuho Investors Securities analyst Nobuo Kurahashi. Sharp expects to sell the 32-inch Freestyle Aquos model for around ¥110,000.“It’s surely vital to keep looking for a new approach, but this may not be the answer,” mr. Kurahashi added.Follow Juro Osawa on Twitter @JuroOsawa<a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2011/08/26/sharp-vies-for-an-edge-in-tv-market/?mod=google_news_blogtag:news.google.com,2005:cluster=http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2011/08/26/sharp-vies-for-an-edge-in-tv-market/?mod=google_news_blogFri, 26 Aug 2011 01:13:14 GMT 00:00″>Sharp Vies for an Edge in TV MarketRelated Blogs

Google I/O 2011 keynote press briefing highlights

Google’s top-brass got up on stage subsequent this morning’s keynote for a quick Q&a session that we certainly had to check out. Want to know what Andy Rubin and company had to say about today’s announcements? Hit the jump to read find out!Q: when are we going to see a general release of Honeycomb?A: Just for background: we did an internal trick to meet the Honeycomb schedule, we didn’t make it available for phones. so we held back the open sourcing of Honeycomb back so people wouldn’t put it on phones and have a crappy experience… but now that it is done. Ice Cream will be the next open source release and that will be this year.Q: with the music service, how does this make sure that you sell music? How are handling licensing issues?A: what you saw today becomes a very compelling platform for music distribution. It is in our plans to sell their artists music, unfortunately, some of there stipulations thus far have been unsustainable and unscalable. the majority of the industry are very excited about the possibilities, we continue to be committed to where this can go. what we launched today is a completely officially authorized service, it is storing content you own, in the cloud with enhancements. We just enable a much more convenient experience.Q: are we going to get a Honeycomb phone? Will the device updates be faster?A: Ice Cream Sandwich is when phones will get the Honeycomb features, so that will be like a merge. a phone is eligible to get updates for 18 months as the platform versions appear. there is no smallest time frame to announce at this time.Q: can you talk about the business uses for Honeycomb tablets? is it still just consumer based?A: I reckon it is appealing to both. I use my laptop a lot less now and rely on my tablet to do most of my work email. I reckon the tablet experience really does make a strong business case and we have some new features including encryption and device management to address those crowds.Q: what changed that incentivizes these carrier to now bring up to date quicker?A: I reckon everyone  really values the ecosystem. what we realized is that there was no common set of expectations set. We reckon of ourselves of the coordinators of all this, and we really want to provide the services our customers want. They want upgrades.Q: what does Ice Cream Sandwich delivery other than unification?A: Our primary job is to make Android run on all devices. Unfortunately, I can’t pre-announce them, but we’ll but we’ll be rolling them out shortly.Q: Do you anticipate them being any new hardware requirements for Ice Cream? are you preparing another Google Device for the Ice Cream rollout?A: We want all phones to run Ice Cream, not just new phones. the Nexus has been the device we’ve used to set the bar. the market works in cycles that revolves around the holidays and summertime. We’ll make an announcement in the future.Q: Why is Music Beta only launching in the U.S.?A: It is really hard to do global launches. It’s hard to sit in a lab and try and anticipates the world’s needs. the goal is to make it as widely adopted as possible. We have no intentions to keep this just to the U.S. once we have the kinks worked out.Q: what is the feature of the streaming music coming down from the cloud?A: We stream up to 320kbps, and that’s based on the feature of the file you upload. We do adjust that based on your network connection while you’re listening.Q: Microsoft has been discussion about the digital home for two decades but nothing has happened. Why is Google@Home different?A: We look at it a small differently. We’re not trying to invent the next killer application, we’re trying to turn everything in your home into an I/O device at an exceptionally low cost. We’re counting on the imagination of the developers to really develop this ecosystem.Q: what is the time desk for some of appliances or devices? what does a manufacturer have to put into its electronics to enable it?A: We’re not quite ready to announce what the technology is, but it is very low cost. It’s wireless, not Wi-Fi. It’s low power. It involves a software stack and a small piece of hardware. We should see these devices by the end of this year. We’re working with partners to get them embedded into their current devices.Q: How do you reconcile some of these new services with reduction data allowances from carriers?A: We go through these cycles. And aptly now we’re going through a cycle where there is heavy network congestion. the next technology step, be it LTE or 5G, will alleviate a lot of these problems. also, most of the consumption will happen at the workplace or at home, so that will decipher some of the issue.Q: Why did you choose to create a different protocol for Android@Home? How does this relate to the smart grid?A: first, we haven’t announced what we’re using, so it could be anything. *laughter* Energy monitoring is exceptionally interesting, but you need to have granularity. you need to know what is chewing up kilowatt hours, not just that you’re chewing up kilowatt hours. Q: How much do you really reckon about Apple when you put out these services since you not-so-subtly mentioned Apple?A: We were just trying to have a small fun. It’s fantastic to have companies competing for the hearts and minds of developers. when that happens, consumers are the ones who win.Q: is there any way to report pirated materials?A: We make it very clear in the stipulations-of-service that users need to upload officially authorized material. We’ll answer to requests from rights owners as necessary.Q: is the XOOM getting preferential treatment?A: the XOOM is new, I reckon it is only two months old — the power of Android is that it isn’t a single product. Knowing what I know internally, we’re going to see some really fascinating things coming really soon.Q: Will the upgrades be international or U.S. only? Sometimes similar devices have not gotten upgrades as quick as their U.S. counterparts.A: We hope for this Android Alliance to be international, you saw Vodafone on the slides from earlier today. We want this to be a global thing and we’re working to do that.Q: what is your stance on UIs like TouchWiz and Sense?A: Android was designed to be customizable and scalable from the beginning. the benefit is that the framework is smart enough to regular across hardware. I don’t believe in having an open platform that commoditizes industries, I reckon allowing skins is really vital. I reckon it is an vital selling point of Android.Q: Does Android have a malware problem?A: We have our sandbox technology on our device side and we are looking into technology on our Market site that will help allay these issues. Last time something snuck through it took us 50 minutes to catch it. We’re working to tune that, but it’s vital to note that we are not going to achieve our wellbeing goals by “locking down” the platform. Samsung LE60C650 LCD

              May 10, 2011 by admin
              Samsung LE60C650 LCD

The high resolution display looks good from regular watching distances (613 feet) and we exclusively recognized display fading along with shade loss with numerous overwhelming viewing angles. Samsung claims that customerssimply can watch High definition high grade movie material at as much as 170 degree without having display failure. I was pleased with the graphic feature a lot from front and middle and finished up being not able to find the processing difficulties the LCD exhibited with watch to HQV testing. most often the LE60C650 in fact does deliver on its assurances. HD picture feature was much crisper and colors are more saturated.. yes, you pay a cost regarding this Samsung LE60C650, but in the event that you might take this bonus cost, you would be completely rewarded. The modern LE60C650 by Samsung has the newest and best attributes that the corporation expects are going to allow Samsung competing with the Tier 1 producers. the remote compliments the set with a similarly clean, cool look. We’d find it is very hard to believe Samsung might find an alternative LCD with an impressive difference over the last outstanding choice; and, well, it has. Samsung’s current variety of TV sets are likely the finest we’d ever noticed. most people enjoy the pattern and feel about the LE60C650 LCD TV. Samsung surely took a risk here with its design, and people think that they place their finances in the absolute right house. although the telly is literally larger sized compared with a typical LCD due to its integrated picture, the stand and also bezel found on surface of the picture give it an exceptionally chic border.Depth is actually superbly bright and even good resolved even with rapid activity, and textures are extraordinarily influential. Darks turned into slightly hazy at side angles although direct appear quite saturated. Learning less concentration grabbing content, like for example some SD sports broadcasts, the LE60C650 LCD does pretty well. It can be hard to produce a broadcast image this particular size, yet the LE60C650 makes a good stab. It is certainly fundamentally free from disturbance and capable of delivering colourful, distinct images. I suspect the anti glare commerce launched towards the box display generates nearly all weakness issues with tone settings along with off slant viewing. In motion, the LCD’s screen feature is definitely magnificent. display disturbance, even in one of the most complicated or challenging scenes, is suppressed clearly and smoothness for example skin tones persuade. The audio system go well, having the weight and clarity could expect granted their value. Speakers stand out too, sounding clean, well balanced and additionally organised. Darkness level is great along with HD films as well. regardless what movie is displayed there is low degradation of black degrees and contrast from side viewing angles beginning at 25 degrees. the high resolution display from Blu Ray and also Broadcast High definition seemed to be very clear, brilliant and also colorful as always, but alas the graphic fails to look as deep as most of the superior display we’ve viewing these days. just for a LCD but, we have been quite satisfied while using Samsung LE60C650 effectiveness. Black depth is remarkable, looking much deeper and darker compared to any kind of telly set before, while still unveiling the necessary detail.Gursel Batmaz is the writer of this Cep Telefonu article. Flowers bloom with deeper meaning

FLOWERS are common subjects in traditional Chinese ink-wash painting, as well as contemporary oils, but flowers today are sometimes seen as trivial, more appropriate to “lady” painters and unworthy vehicles for serious ideas. The “Colorful World” exhibition underway at M50, the artists’ hub, presents flower works by oil painter Sun Liang, who paints in ink, and ink-wash painter Lu Chuntao, who paints in oil. “Late last summer, I picked up a failing cicada on my way home,” recalls Sun. “Suddenly, I grasped a deeper understanding of the cycle of life. my heart was opened; nature lives with me in symbiosis, everything is with me as a whole.” since then, he paints not only the failing cicada but other nameless flowers and grasses. he rented an ancient house in a small canal town in the quiet suburbs. “Every morning when I open the window there, I hear the flowing of the river and see the dawn light on the trees,” he says. “I sublimate my mind to these sounds and images. there is a captivating feeling of randomness and frankness fused in Sun’s flowers, and viewers feel drawn to their tranquility. in a striking contrast, Lu’s flowers are distant and mysterious. he paints vast fields of dark, regular rows of dark flowers against a dark backdrop, as though they are flowers from another time in history, or another planet. “Some question what ink and wash can accomplish today and I try to answer in my paintings,” says Lu. “The flowers are blossoming brilliantly in my heart but they appear pious and quiet in my paintings. Lu’s paintings suggest the texture and color blocks often found in oils. “I don’t like to be bound by technique,” Lu says. “Really, the real poems, music and paintings emerge when technique is forgotten.” Date: through May 15, 10am-6pm Venue: Huafu Art Space, Rm 217, Bldg 4, 50 Moganshan Rd <a href="http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=470478&type=Featuretag:news.google.com,2005:cluster=http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=470478″>Flowers bloom with deeper meaningRelated Blogs

Insect with extra set of wings found

MARSEILLE, France, may 4 (UPI) — a cicada-like animal called the treehopper has a third pair of wings in a reversal of usual insect evolution, French scientists say.The findings by Benjamin Prud’homme and colleagues at the Institute of the Ecology of Development in Marseille are reported in the journal Nature this week.Insects’ wings vary widely, but it was believed they grew only from the second and third segments of the thorax. The treehopper’s “helmet,” which grows from the first thoracic segment, runs the length of the body, and has a range of colors, shapes and sizes. Previous research suggested the helmet came from exoskeletal plates on the first thoracic segment. Prud’homme and his team say it is really a fused pair of wings, although it is not used for flying. The researchers say the treehoppers’ helmet is the first known example of new body appendages appearing in more than 250 million years of insect evolution.<a href="http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2011/05/04/Insect-with-extra-set-of-wings-found/UPI-66341304549762/tag:news.google.com,2005:cluster=http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2011/05/04/Insect-with-extra-set-of-wings-found/UPI-66341304549762/Wed, 04 May 2011 22:57:42 GMT 00:00″>Insect with extra set of wings foundRelated Blogs
