Billy Graham Hospitalized

92-year ancient evangelical preacher, Billy Graham, has been hospitalized. Reps for the pastor confirmed late today (May 11) that Graham has been admitted to an Ashville, North Carolina hospital due to a pulmonary shape up. “Initial testing suggested pneumonia, and further diagnostic studies showed his heart was normal,” Mission Hospital officials said in a statement. According to MSNBC, Dr. Lucian Rice, Graham’s primary physician says no date has been set for Graham’s release but he added that Graham is alert and resting comfortably. Graham spokesman Larry Ross says the “he is feeling better since he arrived at the hospital. we anticipate his pneumonia to clear with treatment and hope he will be able to soon return home.Incoming search stipulations:

The Balcony is Closed: Whatever Happened to the ...

In case here was any doubt, Thor and his mighty hammer have officially opened the 2011 Summer movie season today. what will follow is four months of blockbusters that will be heavy on proceedings and even heavier on reviews comparing their visuals to video games. but as Hollywood and Redmond trade ideas back and forth, the once fantastic institution that is the licensed game has gone by the wayside.Okay, “once fantastic institution” might be the nostalgia discussion, but licensed games were always plentiful, even if they weren’t always excellent games. we all know the tale of Atari practically bankrupting themselves to produce the woefully terrible E.T. game for the Atari 2600. And Acclaim’s history of low review scores (and eventual liquidation) could be attributed to the company’s string of licensed games. But titles like GoldenEye and The Chronicles of Riddick prove that a licensed game doesn’t have to be a cheaply made cash-in. They can be classics. yet their number is decreasing, even as gamemakers have embraced the trappings of Hollywood during the development process.Nowhere is this more apparent than at Naughty Dog as they work on Uncharted 3. the studio doesn’t consider Uncharted 3 a game, but an “interactive cinematic experience.” the developer has built a giant motion capture studio and they film some of the game’s proceedings setpieces in a way that is indistinguishable from a CGI blockbuster like Avatar.Hollywoodized development cultures are just the beginning. Every major publisher has begun to dip their toes into the movie business. Publishers like 2K Games (Prey 2), WB Games (FEAR 3) and Sony (Resistance 3) have all experimented with live proceedings trailers to promote some of their biggest releases. Electronic Arts (Dead Space, Dante’s Conflagration) and THQ (Red Faction: Armageddon) have dabbled in Direct-to-DVD films released alongside their more cinematic offerings. And just this past week, Ubisoft created a film production studio to result in some of their original properties to the big scsreen.Even Activision, who has been staunchly supportive of licensed games this generation, has recruited a quartet of horror icons to “act” in the latest Call of Duty: Black Ops expansion: “call of the Dead.” By all accounts, the experience is a tremendous success and I’ve seen more than one forum post suggesting that the scenario needs to become an actual movie. But, the most vital melding of games and movies has to be L.A. Noire‘s inclusion in this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. using a sophisticated facial imaging program, Team Bondi and Rockstar Games have created a game that requires the player (as a detective investigating a murder) to read people’s reactions to a line of questioning. Combined with the temperamental sensibilities of film noir and hardboiled pulp fiction of the era, L.A. Noire will liable become the new go-to game when people submit to ‘adult’ storylines in video games. As developers strive to capture a small piece of the Hollywood process, game executives are attempting to push Hollywood away. EA Games president Frank Gibeau told Develop “the days of licensed-based, 75-rated games and it can’t make it. in our mind, of course they can make it. Here’s a big audience that’s interested in this content. you just have to build it aptly for them.” For the most part, Telltale is one of the only companies championing licensed content in today’s gaming landscape, announcing games based on Jurassic Park (which is a side tale to the first film), “Law & Peacefulness: Los Angeles,” and Back to the Future (which promises to give players the Back to the Future part IV they always wanted) to digital distribution channels in recent months.<a href="http://www.warpzoned.com/?p=7275tag:news.google.com,2005:cluster=http://www.warpzoned.com/?p=7275Fri, 06 May 2011 18:23:56 GMT 00:00″>The Balcony is Closed: Whatever Happened to the Licensed Game?Related Blogs

Yellowstone volcano plume bigger than previous ...

University of Utah geophysicists made the first generous-scale picture of the electrical conductivity of the oversize underground plume of hot and partly molten rock that feeds the Yellowstone supervolcano. the image suggests the plume is even bigger than it appears in earlier images made with earthquake waves.“It’s like comparing ultrasound and MRI in the human body; they are different imaging technologies,” says geophysics Professor Michael Zhdanov, principal author of the new examine and an expert on measuring magnetic and electrical fields on Earth’s surface to find oil, gas, minerals and geologic structures underground.“It’s a really new and different way of imaging and looking at the volcanic roots of Yellowstone,” says examine co-author Robert B. Smith, professor emeritus and research professor of geophysics and a coordinating scientist of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. The new University of Utah examine has been accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters, which plans to publish it within the next few weeks. In a December 2009 examine, Smith used seismic waves from earthquakes to make the most detailed seismic images yet of the “hotspot” plumbing that feeds the Yellowstone volcano. Seismic waves move faster through cold rock and slower through hot rock. Measurements of seismic-wave speeds were used to make a three-dimensional picture, quite like X-rays are combined to make a medical CT scan. The 2009 images showed the plume of hot and molten rock dips downward from Yellowstone at an slant of 60 degrees and extends 150 miles west-northwest to a point at least 410 miles below the Montana-Idaho border – as far as seismic imaging could “see.”In the new examine, images of the Yellowstone plume’s electrical conductivity – generated by molten silicate rocks and hot briny water mixed in partly molten rock – shows the conductive part of the plume dipping more gently, at an slant of I don’t know 40 degrees to the west, and extending I don’t know 400 miles from east to west. the geoelectric image can “see” only 200 miles deep. Two Views of the Yellowstone Volcanic PlumeSmith says the geoelectric and seismic images of the Yellowstone plume look somewhat different because “we are imaging slightly different things.” Seismic images highlight materials such as molten or partly molten rock that slow seismic waves, while the geoelectric image is sensitive to briny fluids that conduct electricity.“It is very conductive compared with the rock around it,” Zhdanov says. “It’s close to seawater in conductivity.”The lesser tilt of the geoelectric plume image raises the possibility that the seismically imaged plume, shaped somewhat like a tilted tornado, may be enveloped by a broader, underground sheath of partly molten rock and liquids, Zhdanov and Smith say.“It’s a bigger size” in the geoelectric picture, says Smith. “We can infer here are more fluids” than shown by seismic images.Despite differences, he says, “this body that conducts electricity is in about the same location with similar geometry as the seismically imaged Yellowstone plume.”Zhdanov says that last year, other researchers presented preliminary findings at a assembly comparing electrical and seismic features below the Yellowstone area, but only to shallow depths and over a smaller area. The examine was conducted by Zhdanov, Smith, two members of Zhdanov’s lab – research geophysicist Alexander Gribenko and geophysics Ph.D. student Marie Green – and computer scientist Martin Cuma of the University of Utah’s Center for High Performance Computing. Funding came from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Consortium for Electromagnetic Modeling and Inversion, which Zhdanov heads. The Yellowstone Hotspot at a GlanceThe new examine says nothing about the chances of another cataclysmic caldera (giant crater) eruption at Yellowstone, which has produced three such catastrophes in the past 2 million years.Nearly 17 million years ago, the plume of hot and partly molten rock known as the Yellowstone hotspot first erupted near what is now the Oregon-Idaho-Nevada border. As North America drifted slowly southwest over the hotspot, here were more than 140 gargantuan caldera eruptions – the largest kind of eruption known on Earth – along a northeast-trending path that is now Idaho’s Snake River Unadorned. The hotspot finally reached Yellowstone about 2 million years ago, yielding three huge caldera eruptions about 2 million, 1.3 million and 642,000 years ago. two of the eruptions blanketed half of North America with volcanic ash, producing 2,500 times and 1,000 times more ash, respectively, than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state. Smaller eruptions occurred at Yellowstone in between the huge blasts and as recently as 70,000 years ago.Seismic and ground-deformation studies earlier showed the top of the rising volcanic plume flattens out like a 300-mile-wide pancake 50 miles beneath Yellowstone. Here, giant blobs of hot and partly molten rock break off the top of the plume and slowly rise to feed the magma chamber – a spongy, banana-shaped body of molten and partly molten rock located about 4 miles to 10 miles beneath the ground at Yellowstone.Computing a Geoelectrical Image of Yellowstone’s Hotspot PlumeZhdanov and colleagues used data collected by EarthScope, an NSF-funded effort to collect seismic, magnetotelluric and geodetic (ground deformation) data to examine the structure and evolution of North America. using the data to image the Yellowstone plume was a computing challenge because so much data was caught up.Inversion is a formal mathematical method used to “extract information about the deep geological structures of the Earth from the magnetic and electrical fields recorded on the ground surface,” Zhdanov says. Inversion also is used to convert measurements of seismic waves at the surface into underground images.Magnetotelluric measurements record very low frequencies of electromagnetic radiation – about 0.0001 to 0.0664 Hertz – far below the frequencies of radio or TV signals or even electric power lines. this low-frequency, long-wavelength electromagnetic field penetrates a couple hundred miles into the Earth. By comparison, TV and radio waves penetrate only a part of an inch. The EarthScope data were collected by 115 stations in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho – the three states straddled by Yellowstone National Park. the stations, which include electric and magnetic field sensors, are operated by Oregon State University for the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology, a consortium of universities. In a supercomputer, a simulation predicts expected electric and magnetic measurements at the surface based on known underground structures. that allows the real surface measurements to be “inverted” to make an image of underground structure.Zhdanov says it took about 18 hours of supercomputer time to do all the calculations needed to produce the geoelectric plume picture. the supercomputer was the Glowing coal cluster at the University of Utah’s Center for High Performance Computing, says Cuma, the computer scientist.Glowing coal has 260 nodes, each with 12 CPU (central processing unit) cores, compared with two to four cores commonly found on personal computer, Cuma says. of the 260 nodes, 64 were used for the Yellowstone examine, which he adds is “unevenly equivalent to 200 common PCs.”To make the geoelectric image of Yellowstone’s plume required 2 million pixels, or picture elements.University of Utah Public Relations201 Presidents Group, Room 308Salt Lake City, Utah 84112-9017(801) 581-6773 fax: (801) 585-3350unews.utah.eduYellowstone volcano plume larger than previous estimatesRelated Blogs

Mormons in the media: YSAs in Chicago, a reward in ...

Young single adults wards in Utah weren’t the only ones to make headlines last week when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the changes to the structure of YSA and student wards. YSAs in Chicago were also in the news with this Chicago Tribune article “Single and spiritual: Youth branch provides a gathering place for Chicago-area Mormons” about the singles branch there. RMs and football Returned missionaries who play football don’t only end up at BYU. Stephan Atrice has returned to the Air Break down College after a two-year mission in Puerto Rico and other areas in the Caribbean. “I wasn’t curing leprosy or anything like that, but with the struggle and how downtrodden life is, what the Savior did is he uplifted people,” Atrice said in an article in the Colorado Springs Gazette. “if people were willing to let us uplift them we did. I can’t describe how many smiles I saw and how many lives I’ve been able to help.” Former University of Southern California quarterback Brad Otton has opened a pizzeria in Nevada and Salt Lake City and a third location in Pasadena, Calif. he served a mission in southern Italy where “he fell in like with Neapolitan-stylishness thin-crust pizza,” according to this feature in the L.A. Times. LDS chapels The ATF is now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the arson at an LDS chapel in Mukilteo, Wash., last fall, intelligence the Herald Net in Everett, Wash., the Seattle Times and at KMNOnews.com. Ground has been broken on a new chapel. A chapel in Palm Desert, Calif., has recently opened, and this article on mydesert.com has several photos of both the interior and exterior of the building. The local wards in Annapolis, Md., were mentioned in this roundup of local churches. Easter A “Walk with Christ” event in Pocatello, Idaho, at the Alameda Stake Center was covered by the Idaho State Journal. the hour-long event included events from the life of Jesus Christ, including his birth, ministry, sentencing and fatality. In a different type of Easter activity, more than 300 youths from Southern California helped out at Lake Elsinore’s annual children’s faith and Easter egg hunt as part of their youth conference. In Lompoc, Calif., young men and young women got their hands dirty this weekend as they helped build a garden for a local shelter. Interfaith “Mormon Night” is usually at a professional sporting event. however, this particular one highlighted by Mark Paredes was at a Jewish synagogue. In Melbourne, Australia, a Mormon and a member of the Baha’i faith have started an interfaith network “aimed to result in faith groups together and learn about other religions,” reported the Melbourne Chief. Service With the upcoming April 30 “Day of Service” in California in the Southeastern U.S. there are more tales about service projects with the invite for anyone in the community to attend. In Camarillo and Oxnard, Calif., and in Lodi, Calif., they are planning to spruce up parks. in Half Moon Bay, Calif., they are planning to tackle graffiti on bridges, walls and benches. A designated day hasn’t stopped Mormons in other areas from serving. In Snow Hill, N.C., nearly 200 Mormon Helping Hands volunteers helped clean up tornado-hurt parks there. In Maricopa, Ariz., the president of a group that operates a successful community garden to supplement the local food bank is LDS and local members volunteer. A food drive in Columbia, S.C., also helped a local food bank there. Missionaries in Australia helped clean plaques honoring late military members in preparation day for the local Anzac Day (like Memorial Day) services there. This ward in Oregon helped make blankets to send to Japan. New historic site in Pennsylvania The LDS Church has announced plans to build a new historic site in Pennsylvania. two of the area papers, the Daily Journal and the “Beaver County Times” picked up the associated Push’s story, which quotation marks extensively from a Deseret News article. Rus Blassoples: Resurrection Sunday

Photo GoogledThose who came to the grave of Jesus on that first Easter morning could never have been adequately prepared for what they were to find. Sunday, the first day of the week, was an run of the mill working day for them. But because their hearts had been broken into a million pieces by the events of the Friday just past, and because they loved their rabbi and friend, they made the effort and found themselves at his tomb. All four Gospels paint the Resurrection encounter ever so slightly differently. and that, for me, is a gift. Too often we are caught up in the details, wrapped up like linen cloth – grave clothes – stifled in the facts. Wanting to know for certain and for sure… But these Gospel pictures will for always move us beyond cock-sureness and certainty…They will forever pull and point us towards truths far deeper and more numinous than facts or words… I like that women are first to arrive and are regular in all the resurrection accounts and that Mary of Magdala, in particular, is always present. in John’s gospel, she is the one who remains behind while the men return home (seemingly satisfied with the fact that Jesus’ body had disappeared)… and then, it is in Mary’s heartache that Easter comes to react to and meet her. wherever you are on your life’s journey, may you like Mary of Magdala, have the heart to push the pause button; to wait and be utterly and completely present, regardless of whether the second is brimming over with grief or gushing with gratitude. have the heart to pause and be completely present. Easter will come to you. and, like Mary, you will hear (y)our Teacher speak your name as only you can hear.aaRus Blassoples: Resurrection SundayRelated Blogs

Samsung in China LCD joint venture

Louise Duffy ©RapidTVNews | 22-04-2011 Samsung Electronics is to invest 541 billion won (£300m) to set up a £1.8 billion flat-screen production joint venture in China. It received Chinese approval for the plant construction in December along with LG display, which is planning a break £2.4bn eighth-generation plant in Guangzhou, Guangdong province. Samsung plans to keep up a 60% stake in the project in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, with Suzhou Industrial Park keeping 30% and Chinese TV maker TCL Corp holding the left over 10%. Samsung initially intended to take an 80% stake in the project but decided to raise its partners’ shares to boost their strategic tie-up, it said in a filing to the Korea Exchange. The South Korean company, which is in an intense competition with rival LG Electronics Inc and LG display over 3D technology to take initiative in the burgeoning 3D TV market, also said it was considering a break £140m investment to buy a 15% stake in Chinese flat-screen panel firm CSOT, partly owned by TCL. China’s LCD TV market is expected to grow to 45 million units this year and to 57.8 million by 2014, according to research firm DisplaySearch. Armenian Youth Association of Ukraine calls on president recognize Armenian Genocide April 13, 2011 | 11:53 The Armenian Youth Association of Ukraine made a request to Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovich for officially authorized declaration of April 24 Day in commemoration of Armenian Genocide victims. “We very much hope the Ukrainian president will hear our voice,” David Mkrtchyan, President of the Association, told Analitika.at.ua. Although many countries recognized and condemned the Armenian Genocide, Ukraine has not so far expressed its attitude to that crime. On April 23, 2010, well-known Ukrainian biased scientists, scholars, public and biased figures, as well as representatives of a number of national minorities, called on the Ukrainian President and Parliament to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide.
